There are several Home Lightning Arrester Types. Depending on their type, lightning arrestors are constructed differently, but their principle of operation remains the same. Surges in the direction of the ground are provided with a path of low resistance.

Home Lightning Arrester Types – Horn Gap Arresters. An arrester with two horn-shaped metal rods, as the name implies. Metal rods can be arranged around a small air gap. These two rods can be separated by increasing the gap between them. Each rod is mounted on a ceramic insulator. It is possible to connect the horn to two dissimilar wires. A resistance coil and a choke coil can connect one side of the horn to the line, while the other side is grounded. In this way, the current is restricted to a very small amount. Choke coils provide high transient reactance as well as low reactance at the usual power frequency. Choke coils therefore prevent transients from entering protected apparatus. By adjusting the gap between the horns, the voltage provided can be reduced to the point where an arc won’t occur.

Home Lightning Arrester Types – Multi-Gap Arresters. Arresters of this type are composed of a series of insulated metal cylinders that are divided by air gaps. The first cylinder of the sequence is connected to the electrical line, while the rest are in series with the ground via resistance. There are shunt resistances in some of the gaps between the next cylinders, which catch a surge when there is an excess of voltage.

Home Lightning Arrester Types – Valve-Type Arresters. High-powered electrical systems can utilize these kinds of arresters. The device consists of two main components, namely spark gaps and non-linear resistor discs. These devices are able to function whenever an extreme voltage causes the spark gaps to stroke & the non-linear resisters maintain the voltage at ground level. When the surplus power surge is over, the resisters can separate the spark gaps.

Home Lightning Arrester Types – Pellet-Type Arresters. Glass tubes filled with lead pellets can be used to design these arresters. Through the lead oxide layer is a coating of lead peroxide. The lead oxide within the lead peroxide does not conduct well. Heat transforms lead oxide into lead peroxide, which provides a pathway for current to flow. Lead oxide will be changed to lead peroxide whenever current is transmitted. Not many arresters use this kind of technology.

Lightning Arrester: A lightning arrester is a device which protects a circuit from lightning strikes. Lighting strokes, in this context, consist of high transient voltages, isolated arcs, sparks, and surge currents due to lightning. Power systems are protected by these devices by sending surges of high voltage to the ground. Ground wire or earthing can also protect these power systems and overhead lines from direct lightning strikes. In order to provide a secure path for the voltage and discharging current, these devices can be arranged on Homes, transmission poles, and towers. Lightning strokes can occur here to protect the system from lightning-induced problems.
